Emerging Artists #27 – Pandr Eyez

November 3, 2011 by

Whenever we hear about a new release from Cascine Records, generally giddy excitement ensues. With new duo Pandr Eyez, things are no different. They employ not only an adventurous approach to creating varied and textured music but also taught us a thing or two about honey badgers. Well, that last part may be a bit of a digression. We met up with Ferren and Tom in a little Turkish café to hear about how they’re handling the transition from self-management to label representation, their love for Prince and the nineties band they’d like to see reform. Warning: it definitely isn’t one you’d expect, but is no less awesome a choice.

Standard first question: how did you two get together, where are you from and why did you decide to make music together?

We met while doing post-grad study courses in London. Ferren is American, having lived out in Denver for a while before moving to London, while Tom is mostly from Reading. The decision to make music together was made after a drunken night with friends that ended up with an impromptu performance in someone’s room with Ferren on a keyboard and Tom on guitar.

How did decide on your sound/direction, and what was behind the decision?

It took us a little while to hit upon a good mix of the things we like to hear in our music, but our sound developed out of that – what we feel is a good combination of our various influences. Although we think the EP as a whole does have a unifying sound about it, the tracks themselves go in a few different directions. Our sound is always changing, as we don’t want to be too much of any one thing.

What equipment are you using for recording, and is there any particular reason behind those choices?

All of the tracks from the ‘Eyes On You‘ EP were arranged and recorded on a Roland MV-8800 sampler, using a cheap dynamic mic and a MicroKorg synth. The choice of equipment stems from the fact that Tom is used to making music with hardware and the hands-on approach to manipulating a track, coming from a DJing and sampling background. The tracks were all then mixed down on a laptop after recording.

Where your first show and what was was it like?

Our first show was at the Old Blue Last this past July. It wasn’t too packed, but we think people had a good time. It was mostly DJ sets, so we stuck out a little bit. But it was cool.

What’s the most high profile show you’ve done and what was that like?

We’ve only played one show so far. So that was it!

How do you plan to get around when you’re touring?

We haven’t gone on tour yet, so we don’t know. But ideally in style.

What bands/artists are you into at the moment new or old?

We both love Prince, and in general we like old school hip hop and throw-back jams. Ferren loves Teena Marie. As far as new stuff goes, right now Tom is listening to Battlekat and DA-10, amongst others.

If you could change one thing about the music industry what would it be?

It would be nice to put out music and let people determine for themselves how they feel about it without having to categorise it.

What can people expect when they come to your live shows?

Ferren dancing and singing in high heels while Tom presses colourful buttons (not in high heels).

If you could get one band to reform who would it be?

Cleopatra. Comin’ atcha.

Final question: what’s coming up next for the band?

Our debut EP just came out, so that’s cool. After that we hope to start playing more shows and put together a possible tour while we work on a release for next year some time.
