Emerging Artists #20 – Boy Friend

June 14, 2011 by

We’ve been sitting on this one for a few weeks now, but as we’re about to get sucked head first into the hight of the festival season we thought it best to get it out now. The next band up for our regular Emerging Artists section are Texan female duo Christa Palazzolo and Sarah Brown…

Standard first question; how did you all get together, where you all from and why did you decide to make music together?

We’ve been best buds since middle school and have toyed with music together over the years (along with sports, fashion and plenty of bad things). We both have pretty different personalities, so it took a while to get a good balance between friendship and music, but Boy Friend is the project that stuck, and we’re both super stoked on it.

What’s behind the band’s sound and how did you come to it?

Sci-fi novels, movies & scores, and pop music. Natural nerdy progressions.

What equipment are you using for recording, and is there any particular reason behind the choice?

We use the gear we play with live to keep it consistent, and are currently recording with Christa’s twin sister who has helped out immensely with all the techie stuff. We like to keep things in the fam & also, we are broke!

Do you live off your music yet or do you have boring day jobs?

This is a sad question! Does anyone live off their music? We have jobs, yes.

Where was the band’s first show and what was was it like?

In a cold dank warehouse with sequins and crystals. It was super free and friendly with astral projections and plenty of smiley cozy bodies.

What’s been your favourite gig you’ve played?

Our first show, but we’ve got some rad ones coming up.

What bands/artists are you into at the moment?

Super into what Balam Acab is up to. Also Melted Toys, Speculator, Young Prisms, Woodsman…Gucci Mane. Add old psych + reggae into the mix as well…

What can people expect when they come to your live shows?

2 girls buried in chords and gear and shiny things giggling between songs and delayed vocals.

If you could get one band to reform who would it be?

Deee-lite

Do you have any confirmed plans for an album yet and if so what can we expect?

Yep, our Egyptian Wrinkle LP is coming out this October on Hell, Yes!

What’s up next for the band?

South/Northeast USA tour this summer w/Speculator! www.boyfriendmusic.tumblr.com for dates
