Radio 1 presenter Scott Mills has just announced to the nation that Rage Against The Machine have beaten X Factor winner Joe McElderry to the Christmas number one spot .

The 1992 song ‘Killing In The Name’ was downloaded 502,000 compared to McElderry’s ‘The Climb’ which shifted 450,000 copies, made-up of a combination of physical sales and downloads.

Thanks to a Facebook led campaign, The Rage Against The Machine song made British chart history as it has become the first ever download only Christmas number one in the UK and has notched up the biggest one-week download sales total in British chart history.

X factor winner Joe McElderry was also due to appear on the chart-show, but failed to turn-up – presumably after hearing in advance news of his defeat.

Speaking via telephone on the show, Rage Against The Machine have said they will keep their promise to play a free gig in the UK, in honour of claiming the Christmas #1 position.
