As 2009 draws to an end, we take a look back at what we believe were the best albums released this year. With such a diverse year in music, which saw atrocious albums and brilliant albums being released in equal abundance, let us guide you through what should be on your Christmas wish list.

Below is our definitive guide to the best albums released over the last twelve months.

20. Sonic Youth - The Eternal (Matador)

16 studio albums. Not many bands producing music today can make that claim. “The Eternal” was Sonic Youth’s 16th studio album, their first since leaving Geffen Records for Matador. Critics acclaimed it as their best work since “Washing Machine” or “A Thousand Leaves”. Musically, things are a continuation of what we love about Sonic Youth. Riff-laden, at times epic, and allowing Kim Gordon a greater role as singer. The addiction of Pavement’s Mark Ibold is a welcome one too. Maybe not startlingly different, but a worthy addition to the Sonic Youth catalogue.
