Fuck Buttons – Tarot Sport (ATP) 12/10/09

Fuck buttons have been making the sort of electronic music that your parents would refer to as white noise since 2004. Alienating for some and pure listening heaven for others, their progressive electro is often as challenging to listen too as it is ground-breaking . Having been picked up by ATP(All Tomorrow Parties) they been allowed the freedom to develop their own signature sound and remained free from external pressures to tone down their forward thinking approach to music or worse reign in their expansive drone dance epics.

Tarot Sport is a testament to and continuation of their endeavours through sound, guided by laptops, drum machines and synthesisers. Opener ‘Surf Solar’ is a ten minute flight through the galaxy according to Fuck Buttons. Shimmering synthesisers swirl like a cascade of stars while a droning organ tears through the track continually dragging it along, before finally spluttering out at the end like a faltering engine. With out any ‘drops’ or refrains the intensity of the track often rises to incredibly dramatic peaks and it’s easy to see why some may find it a challenging listen.

Surf Solar is not alone in its epic stature. In-fact five of the seven songs on the album are over eight minutes long, yet surprisingly Tarot Sport is more accessible then their first album. Hidden in the mountainous sound-scapes of The Lisbon Menu and Olympians, can be found hooks and melodies, which through their simplistic nature provide some truly hypnotic and memorable moments.

Tarot Sport is work of epic proportions, matched only in its brilliance by it’s originality. One day every band will want to sound like Fuck Buttons and it can’t come too soon.
