Mogwai – Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will

Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will’ is a bit of a sobering album title. Then again, ‘Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will’ is a bit of a sobering album. Mogwai are back and they’re beautiful.

Mogwai are, now more than ever, all about the music. The vocals – or lack of them – do nothing to stunt the brilliance of their seventh release. A few words have been thrown into the album a handful of times, but they act more as additional instruments, emphasising the band rather than competing with them.

My point being, Mogwai don’t need words – the music really does speak for itself. This album swirls up and down between idyllic, classical keyboard and grungy, reverb-heavy guitar. Dramatic and beautiful, these transformations don’t seem forced or jolty. The whole album blends together while managing to retain individuality between each track.

It’d be interesting to know how these guys came up with the track names. In particular ‘You’re Lionel Richie’. But this title, as well as ‘How To Be A Werewolf’ and ‘George Square Thatcher Death Party’ have done their job by bringing a smile to my face and providing an interesting contrast to the music’s tone.
