The Charlatans – Who We Touch (Cooking Vinyl) 06/09/2010

The Charlatans are back with their eleventh studio album and it does not disappoint! From start to finish, the ageing indie boys deliver one amazing song after another, proving why they still deserve to be one of the top bands in the UK today.

Kicking off with the incredible 1st single off the album “Love is Everything”, The Charlatans combine wonderfully written lyrics with excellent melodies that will stay in your head as soon as you press the play button.

Every track is magnificently crafted and unique so it was hard to pick a favourite, but in the end I felt the stand out numbers were the lively “My Foolish Pride” and the more relaxed “Intimacy”.

“My foolish Pride” is a keyboard heavy number with a soft drum beat that will have your feet tapping along in no time, while “Intimacy” is a more bass focused track that shows off lead singer Tim Burgess’ vocal range to perfection. Generally, many of the tracks have the same chilled vibe as “Intimacy” rather than being a group of heavy, fast-paced tracks so perhaps not the kind of record you would have played at a party, but it helps to pleasantly while away a car journey or, after a hard day’s work, you will be transported into a peaceful place.

Although starting the album with a fast paced corker of a song, the guys slow it down for the touching final track “You Can Swim”. However, this is by no means a bad thing as it is a beautifully played song and it will get your emotions running with its gentle vocals, making it a stunning end to a fantastic compilation of music.

Twenty years after the release of their debut album, The Charlatans are still on top form and “Who We Touch” is a definite must have for any music lovers CD collection!
