Army Navy – Saints (Fandango) 06/07/2007

Army Navy

Still relatively unknown this side of the pond, Army Navy have been feeding the ‘hype machine’ stateside for some time now. Judging by their first UK release ‘Saints’ it’s easy to see why. Owing heavily to Teenage Fan Club, the song melds the most basic of pop elements with indie sensibilities to create pure pop gold. The opening jangley guitar riff exudes sunshine and as the drums roll the whole song melts into three and half minuets of dreamy pop-rock. Yet underneath all the upbeat harmonies is an undercurrent of melancholic lyrics, which are enough to keep even the broodiest of listeners happy.

B-side ‘Get Right Back’, a cover of the Maxine Nightingale 70s classic, is another refreshingly upbeat song, with catchy harmonies that will float around in your head for days. There might not be much tampering with the arrangements, but Kennedy’s vocals more than do the song justice.

Expect to hear the B word around these guys for some time.
