Hockey – Song Away (Virgin) 14/09/2009

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last six months or just not switched your radio on, then you would have surely heard of Portland indie outfit Hockey. Their latest single ‘Song Away’ has to be the most plugged song on radio at the moment and even made it onto my local pub quiz’s name that tune section – a mean feat considering it’s run by an ageing local radio DJ who probably hasn’t brought a record since 1976.

Anyway, whether you love or loath them they seem like they’re here to stay, largely because of their slightly edgy radio friendly punk funk and knack of writing an uplifting catchy chorus. But, herein lays the problem. Not quite full on alt-inide or pure pop, Hockey seems to be edging toward the most mediocre of musical states – radio friendly pop-fodder. It’s a state that’s has proved successful for the likes of the Killer’s over recent years, but whether Hockey’s album will be an advancement on the firm grounding set by their previous singles is yet to be seen.
