Lightspeed Champion – Marlene (Domino) 25/01/2010

Dev Hynes first single since his first folk outing ‘Falling Off The Lavender Bridge’ finds the songwriter still toying with folk and alt country. As a precursor to his forthcoming album ‘Life is Sweet! Nice to Meet You’, Marlene provides an optimistic hint toward what is still to come from the enigmatic Hynes, yet doesn’t really do much else.

Given that he played and arranged all of the instruments on the song you can forgive Marlene’s simplistic and upbeat approach. What really brings the song to life is Hynes’ distinctive vocals. His range doesn’t seem to of improved In his absence; throughout their flung out of his mouth until they hit the slightly out of range chorus and then reeled back in for the slightly more subdued verses. Then again this is the man who brought you Test Icicles, so I’m sure the finer points of the chromatic scale et al are not on his mind when he comes to record. Instead the vocals are dragged along by Dev’s energy and flair .Add to this his typically strange subject matter and the whole thing starts to take shape before its abrupt end.
