The Drums – Lets Go Surfing (Moshi Moshi) 28/09/2009

The Drums

US four piece, The Drums, are the latest indie act to find themselves on the front pages of music blogs both sides of the Atlantic. Consisting of childhood friends and sighting their influences as surf pop and Factory Records, it’s easy to see why so many people are getting excited about them. Their first single ‘Let’s go surfing’ is a perfect introduction to the band.

Their influences are obvious and immediately noticeable, but are disparate enough to be transformed into something new and unique. As you would expect from a band that listen to Factory Records, the guitars are New Order-esque and the production has a hollow, industrial late ‘80s feel. Where The Drums excel is in marrying these elements with upbeat lyrics like ‘wake up, it’s a beautiful morning’ and injecting them with breezy surf pop harmonies.

Beach Boy’s doing New Order – yes please!
