Various Cruelties – Neon Truths (Almanac Recordings)
June 1, 2011 by TP James
Various Cruelties are a new northern 4-piece set to make big waves over the course of the year, with countless appearances lined up for the summer festival circuit and an engaging sound to draw you toward whichever tent or stage they may grace. And ‘Neon Truths’, their first single proper is a great way kick off our association with the newest buzz band on the scene.
It’s a catchy, fast-paced song about love and vitality that comes riding through your lives to shake away the mundane of your day. It’s really nothing new, but for some reason sounds bright, uplifting and is a refreshing slant for the indie songwriting class to have a new group that mix core elements of pop, folk, rock and soul.
The b-side ‘She Is The One’ is a slower burner than the lead song, but another true reflection of singer Liam O’Donnell’s soul inspired musings. An accomplished solo songwriter before forming Various Cruelties, he attracted pub-filled audiences every time he landed in London town and gained a semi-cult status as a performer in his hometown of Leeds. Both songs here reflect the promise of his acoustic folk prowess but the rhythm section and added backup from another three musicians really fulfil and compliment the songs he has written.
This is a great way to start our affiliation with Various Cruelties. The lead single is catchy enough, and clocking in at just over two and a half minutes, is a brief enough to leave you wanting a lot more. The summer is just about the right time for this song to drop, and I have a feeling that this year is going to need a band as good as this.
